Hydraulic Hand Brake

Postby MadCow on Wed Oct 26, 2011 9:02 pm

Hi

Does anyone know whether a hydraulic hand brake is road legal? My guess is no but I want to make sure before I order my brakes.

Thanks

HI,

Strictly speaking to be legal your car must have two independant braking systems, generally in a car that would be normal hydraulkic brakes and secondly a mechanical handbrake.
A hydraulic handbrake would be legal if it was totally independant of the normal hydraulic brakes, ie seperate lines and seperate caliper(s).

As far as "roadworthy" is concerned, it is unlikely it would ever be picked up if the two systems were sharing lines and caliper, the thing to consider is your own safety, if you share a common brake line for the main brakes and handbrake and that line fails you will have no brakes at all.
