VDO speedo pickup?

Postby Trev on Fri Jul 18, 2008 1:50 pm

Hi guys

I've got the full VDO set of gauges - also bought quite a nifty speedo sensor that screws onto the original speedo drive ouput on the gearbox 8) Problem is, due to space constraints in the transmission tunnel, I can't use the nifty little sensor  Time for plan B - Where can I get one of those pickup sensors that run off the prop shaft bolts?

Cheers all

Hi Trev,

Do you know if your nifty little sensor is universal or a VDO specific item? I'm looking for something similar for my T50 box --> Auto Guage setup.

Thanks
Ettienne

Hi Ettienne

The sensor was supplied with the guages directly from VDO - I'm pretty sure it will work with any guage that requires an electronic pulse/ trigger input. (Most electronic gauges work like this I think...). As mentioned though, It's quite a "bulky" item and you may not have enough space between the speedo output and the transmission tunnel. If you have dimensions of how much soace you have available, I'll be able to tell you if it will fit... Let me know!

I resorted to buying a proximity sensor / switch for R200.00 or so from a supplier here in Cape Town. It picks up signal from the prop shaft bolts on the diff flange - working a treat.

Hi Trev
I was quoted R412-62 (Excl. VAT) for a Ploskon M18 PNP PSI Normally open 1KHz proximity switch, Part No. PSI186313F from Fox Controlls in Blairgowrie. http://www.foxcontrols.co.za
I don't mind people making a profit for a living but I have an issue when they try to get rich off 1 item :-(

I hope you don't mind me asking:
What make model is yours and does it work well with the VDO? Where did you get it from too?

Cheers,
Phil

Hi Phil

Got it from ElectroMechanica - see link below for contact details, there is a branch in Joey's...

http://www.em.co.za/productspage.cfm?datafield=157

Not exactly sure of the part number - Very NB to make sure you get the DC, 3 wire 12 - 24V sensor (I think mine was the M12 one)

As mentioned - it's working perfectly - the VDO gauges are really easy to set up / calibrate as well.

Good luck

Cheers

PS - I'm off to register one very shiny orange Locost 20V Velocity :D

I have just phoned Electro Mechanica and the price is now R327-62, due a price increase. I'm in the wrong industry when these guys can justify a 60% price increase due to the exchange rate...

Hey Phil

Came so close to registering today... had to get my little girl to the pediatrician to get fixed (GP's and their misdiagnosis!). Anyway, temp permit is valid until monday, so Monday will be the the day - Hell, I might even give roadworthy a bash 8)

Pics, erm... ja, mmmm, the dog ate them... I'll get the camera out tomorrow! (note to self)

I honestly remember there being 2 proximity switches available - the one switch was significantly more, so I took the cheaper one... definitely not more than R250.00 - bloody crooks!

Did you get the switch already?

Cheers

Thanks Trev, I will see if I can quickly put the gearbox back in today and measure it. Are these sensors gearbox specific? I should in theory have a bit more space as I have a slightly bigger than locost chassis

Hi trev, i've measure the space but it's pretty odd, could you send me a photo of that nifty little unit and maybe measurements of it? i know our tunnel is a bit wider than locost.

Thanks
Ettienne
