Gearbox stuck in reverse gear

Postby Jolly Jim on Mon Aug 26, 2013 9:15 am

Good Morning

My Ford 4 speed gearbox (Escourt Mk11) is stuck in reverse gear. Gearlever moves freely, but no gear selection. Any pointers will be highly appreciated!

Is the box in the car still or have you removed it? If the stick moves freely but is not selecting gears then it sounds like something has broken; the most likely culprit I think would be one of the roll pins that are used to retain the selector fork connector, which is the bit that the gearstick connects to, or the selector boss that sits between the selector forks inside the box. These two items are connected to the selector shaft, the gearstick moves the selector fork connector, which moves the selector shaft. This motion is transferred to the selector boss which selects the gears.

Hi Ross

Box is still in the car. Thanks for the pointers - will have a look. Where can I source parts for the gearbox (preferably in the Centurion area?)

Best

Selock pins should be available from most "Bolt n nut" shops

Thanks Hamish

Had a look last night - seems like the selector fork on the gear lever is ok. Gearbox will have to come out to have a proper look at it....

Hi Ross/Hamish

Took the gearbox out this morning. It seems as if the boss on the gear selector shaft - that is the shaft that connects to the gearlever, has somehow disconnected from the selector forks. The boss around the selector shaft has a boss on it with a pinlike protrusion, that seems to have somehow slipped out of the selector forks. Is this possible? Or has something broken? How do I go about fixing it?

I think a pic is in order just for clarity ,is this internal or at the gearlever extension housing?

Sounds like a Selock pin has sheared , sometime's the remains stay in place looking for all the world like they're still connected but have parted company between the shafts.

The easiest way is to line up the pin and punch it through with a pin punch of the right size.

That boss with the pin sticking out is attached to the selector shaft by a 3mm roll pin. If the boss can move on the shaft then the pin is broken.

Good Afternoon All

Hamish/Ross thanks a lot for the assistance - really appreciated!

Went and bought a Haynes Escort Mk2 manual. Looking at the gearbox section in the manual the problem was obvious - nothing broken! The selector mechanism had nor been assembled correctly after a rebuild! The boss was not in the 1/2 or 3/4 selectors at all! Assembled the selector mechanism as per the book and all is cool....
The background to this car is that I bought it a few weeks ago. The owner mentioned that the gearbox had been reconned by a well known gearbox remanufacturer, with all bearings and seals replaced. This seems to be the case; however what concerns me is that the ex owner said he drove the car after the gearbox recon and all was well, until he put it into reversa at some time and than the box would not work anymore. Question is, can the selector mechanism go out of whack so bad by itself that it has to be stripped and reassembled to fix it? I do not believe so - your thoughts?
Why I would like more detail on this is I would not like to take the motor and gearbox out of the car every so often to reassemble the selector mechanism.....

Best

I'm totally astounded that the box was assembled incorrectly, I would have said it was impossible to do that! :?

Re-Conned?
I am busy rebuilding my 7 and I believe my whole car was re-conned, or at least I was.
