2.0 Zetec on Toyota 4AGE 20V Thottles

Postby Gerrie Brits on Tue Feb 26, 2013 2:59 pm

Hi, just to give you guys some back ground……
I started a few years ago to build a Locost, using a chassis from Brad (Locost SA). I have all the major components and most of the smaller stuff also. I am currently working abroad, so progress is not what it is supposed to be, but we’ll get there….eventually.

I got a complete Ford 2.0 Zetec Mk3 engine (ex 2000 Mondeo / Focus) with low km’s at a good price (R3800) & a Ford Type 9 box to go with it. I also got a Rowland manifold to mount 45mm Toyota Throttle Bodies. I decided to build the car for street use, and do not plan any other mods to the engine, except for the oil pan. Otherwise it will remain standard as far as possible.

I would like to hear your opinion on the mock-up of the Rowland manifold for the 45mm Toyota TB’s and 60mm inlet rams that will be fitted. Here are a few pics of the intended set-up and some of the issues I had to consider:

1.The manifold I am using is from Rowland in the Cape, and it is quite good quality. It fitted spot-on, but needed some trim work. On the manifold, the TB’s are spaced in pairs. This leaves a slightly bigger gap in the middle. I had to make special a connector to make the linkage work. This connector quite robust and is bolted on, and adjustable enough to set the throttles.

2.One of the issues that surfaced is the throttle cable quadrant and cable bracket that had to be spaced by 19mm for the set-up to clear the fuel rail and still operate properly. This will now need a modified linkage (longer and curved…) between the quadrant and throttle body. Question I have is will this set-up work OK, or will it cause any problems with respect to accelerated wear on the throttle quadrant? Other options anybody…?

3.Although there are vacuum take-offs on each of the TB’s I will not utilize any vacuum for the set-up I intend using. Can I cap / plug them?
4.The Rowland manifold came pre-drilled for standard Ford injectors, and a new fuel rail, but I decided to use the Ford fuel rail and injector set-up, including the Ford fuel regulator (original that came with the engine). Anything specific I should look out for / take care of…?
5.I currently have 60mm inlet rams to go with the TB’s. I plan to enclose them in a plenum chamber / inlet box appropriately sized for the 2.0 engine. Will this work...? Any other options...?

Thank you in advance,

Hi Gerrie,
I closed off those little vacuum tubes using plastic end caps that are made for covering the ends of carbon fibre kite spars. I bought them from a place in New Zealand that specialises in parts for kites, even with the postage they cost next to nothing.
Locost chassis with Toyota 20 valve blacktop and T50 box.

Thank you for the reply guys.... That's easy enough; I will be on the lookout for some rubber caps.

Hi Guys,

I progressed a little bit since my last post due to working abroad, however I still need a bit of 'small' stuff...

I need to get the small adjustable throttle link that connect the throttle quadrant the Toyota TB's, with the throttle spindle. I will have to be modify the link a little , but I need the connecters to get the correct length for the link and make it work properly. I have made a few enquiries, but it seem to be hard to come by, but then again, maybe I did not talk to the right people...

Anyway, is there someone out there that has a spare one lying around, or are there replacements that can be used and are they available thru local Toyota Dealer? Any help will be much appreciated....
