Hi Folks

Bit of a noob question since I guess I should know this, but how do I know what size/length/spring rate would suit my car? I have a Birkin-esque chassis running a Silvertop and used almost exclusively for racing (Escort front uprights with Cortina disks and Escort live axle at the rear with drums). It currently has rather old Spax adjustables, but I don't want to assume they are the correct. The fronts don't seem to have much travel if you look at the space between the shock top and the bump stop. Car weighs around 610kgs in race trim. I have heard one needs about 1/3 travel droop etc, but how does one work out spring rates etc?

Thanks
Andre

On the damper size issue, simply measure the actual damper length (from mount to mount) when the car is at its normal ride height. From there you can calculate the right open and close lengths. Your 1/3 droop 2/3 bump is a good rule of thumb. Please just remember that the quoted damper lenghts does not include the 1" bump stop. I.e. you need to add 1" to the quoted closed length.

Spring rates is difficult and can only really be tested by trial and error. The biggest factor is the effective spring rate vs the actual spring rate - here you need to take into account the damper angle - the bigger the angle from vertical the lower your effective spring rate is. For instance say your damper is sitting at 45deg from vertical, if you have a 400 pound spring on that damper, the effective spring rate for the wheel is probably about 200 pounds (thumb suck, did not calculate it)

For a typical Birkin you need 300-350 pound front springs (ball park numbers - depends on the track width)
Rear you need 175-200 for a live axle (with vertical dampers)
and 200-250 for an independant (with the dampers at an angle)

Excellent, thanks @muller!

Although I notice these shocks are all the same length so guessing they are for a IRS chassis. Will drop Brad a mail to see what live axle options he has.

Thanks

The reason they are the same is that is what is used on the Locost chassis. Brad can order any size you want so good call to chat to him

Hi

We can get the shocks in almost any size, the 13" open, 9" closed are the 'Locost Standards' these we get every order and usually have in stock all the time.
We can get other sizes, and even other mountings, the standard being 1/2" metalastic bush, some of the Live Axle rears use a stud top mount rather than an 'eye'.

The 'non standard' ones we order special, and as the factory are often working on 5-6 weeks lead time it can be difficult to fit in with our regular shipments.

The R5,000 relates to the 'standard' sizes, non standard we can do, but the price is R5,500 and we would require a 50% deposit, still a very good price, and we would need orders and deposits before the end of this month to meet the "June collection".
